American Panic

This post at Powerline informs us of an intriguing essay by Norman Podhoretz. He refers to a time during the American Revolution that resembles the current popular opinion about the Iraq War.

The similarities to our situation today are uncanny. We, too, are in the midst of a rapidly spreading panic. We, too, have our sunshine patriots and summer soldiers, in the form of people who initially supported the invasion of Iraq—and the Bush Doctrine from which it followed—but who are now abandoning what they have decided is a sinking ship. And we, too, are seeing formerly disguised opponents of the war coming more and more out into the open, and in ever greater numbers.

I think the only panic occurring in our country over Iraq is from the news media and the leaders of the Democrat Party. While the general public may have concerns about the war, polls have shown that to "cut and run" is not an option with the majority of the American public. As a matter of fact many of the concerns that Americans have, have been perpetrated by the Democrat leadership and thier accomplices, the media. Military success in Iraq would severely weaken the Democrats since thier criticism of Bush and the military has been non-stop and they have not come up with thier own plan for victory except creating a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq. Withdrawing without victory? Perhaps, since they have not shown us any strategy to accomplish victory THEN withdraw the troops. If Bush succeeds in Iraq, then the Vietnam syndrome which the Dems hold dear so they can say, "See!! We told you not to go to Iraq!" will no longer be there for them to hold on to. If the Dems lose Vietnam they lose all, for that is all they have left that is viable......

BBlais, Thanks for posting, and checkin out Geoffoshpere.

I think you make a great point about the "the Vietnam syndrome". Image a world where the tragic, embarrassing lesson of Vietnam is not the latest memory of our brave American heroes who died to defend freedom. The future holds the memory of the liberation of a society and the elimination of a threat to freedom. The influence of the Liberal media has been repelled. And the American people can be proud.
